Forman Arts Initiative
A Philadelphia-based arts organization to support local artists and cultural organizations through grants (Art Works), residencies (Public Works), and a new 100,000-square-foot arts campus in Kensington opening by 2027. Taking inspiration from the resilience of local ecology, the planting approach will replace invasive species with low maintenance native plantings.
Seasonality is a major driver of the campus experience at FAI. Planting was selected to amplify the experience of these small spaces.
For example the entry garden, planned for the image below will replicate a woodland taking advantage of historic industrial structure casting shade and shadow.
Furthermore, the site will feature a lawn and large pavilion surrounded by a meadow with year-round seasonal interest. Lastly a pocket forest installation and planted courtyard will also be included.

Growing from the Root & Agroecology Manual
Philadelphia’s first comprehensive, 10-year urban agriculture plan, released in April 2023 to secure, sustain, and expand community farming which has been essential to immigrant and working class communities throughout the city. Beginning in 2019, it focuses on racial and economic justice, land access for food growers, and policy changes to protect, rather than displace, urban gardens. With the City's zoning codes formally recognizing Urban Agriculture (Community Garden, Market Farm, Animal Husbandry, and Horticulture Nurseries) this unique plan highlights the threat of garden loss and mismanagement as Philadelphia densifies with infill housing.
Work from the plan led to the creation of the Agroecology Manual as written by food ways activists at Soil Generation. M Land Studio helped with the graphic design and production of this political growers guide.

Springside Chestnut Hill Academy
Campus Quad: Schematic Design for SCH's campus quad between the historic Inn and the newly renovated exercise and dinning facility. The quad takes advantage of the campus's tradition of using stone materials for seating and retaining edges with a monumental proposal for a stone porch which doubles as an outdoor classroom. Additionally, the Quad's design accommodates loading and storage for operations as well as donor opportunities for parents and alumni.
The Rec [Theater Entry]: Currently under construction, the entrance to this Black Box theater in a renovated historic horse stables features additional stone seating along for a small outdoor amphitheater and parking. Given the site's location in a woodland and at the bottom of a ravine, the planting design takes advantage of the mature canopy with beautiful understory plantings for a peaceful sitting area when not utilized for construction.
